Say less and ask more.
This probably isn't the first time you've heard something like this statement, but how often do we follow it?
Today I got a chance to do just this, and it was amazing what I learned. I'm doing a week-long internship at First National Bank in Omaha (NE), and this was our first day.
There are seven of us in the group, and by the end of the day I found a connection to each person. I think I was just as excited about that as I was about the internship experience itself.
And then I asked myself, "Why does this excite you so much?"
The answer was easy. I listened more than I talked. I asked questions and then listened to the answers without jumping right back in to make a comment. I stayed in the moment, made eye contact, and let information digest.
You know how someone tasting wine smells it first and then upon taking a drink swishes it around in his/her mouth?
That's how I felt about being observant today. I allowed myself to simply take it all in and learn from the educators in the group. By doing so, I was able to make a connection and learned something about each person in the process.
Give it a shot and let me know what happens when you do it.
