Sometimes we need to check ourselves. Step back. Take a look in the mirror.
If we don't like what we see, then it's up to us to change our perspective.
Take Facebook for example. At times I get irritated by it. It happened this year in the months leading up to the presidential election.
But that irritation is all on me. I get to make the choices as to what I allow myself to be exposed to. I decided to unfollow the overly aggressive views.
I look at social media outlets like Facebook so much differently now. I think about what people are posting. They are posting about what excites them, what they are proud of, when they are hurting, and causes that are important to them.
When others tell me that there is so much drama, arguments, or debates, I can't help but think that they have a choice. They are choosing to allow that negativity in their lives.
I don't have that problem.
My problem is way too many cute animal videos. Sweet baby smiles. Celebratory milestones.
See where I'm going here?
I have a few friends who are disenchanted and are posting about whether or not to keep their various social media accounts. I'm not sure how to comment or if they want a comment. Are they simply throwing it out there as a train of thought? Do they want to be reassured that the world is a good place with good people in it? Do they need an ego boost and want to be talked into staying?
Since I'm not sure, I don't say anything. It isn't that I don't care. It's more or less knowing that it's a decision they have to make for themselves.
If you're on the fence trying to decide, answer these questions for yourself:
1. What do you enjoy about social media?
2. When you log off, do you have a feeling of happiness and warmth or one of dreading, sadness, and frustration?
3. Is social media a time sucker or does it allow you to catch up with family and friends?
4. Do you have fun on social media?
5. What do you gain from the experience?
When it comes down to it, simplify.
If it adds value and happiness, keep it.
If it doesn't, get rid of it.
I'm a lover of life, an eternal optimist, and I have an intense desire to add value through simple living and positive vibes.
