"Breathe in peace, breathe out joy." -- Babe from Grace and Frankie (Season 2, Episode 12)
When Babe said this in the episode, it instantly resonated with me. Not only did I like it when I heard it, I loved it when I tried it. It made me think about my thoughts, words, and actions, and how they might come across to others.
When we inhale peace, we're saying to the world and ourselves that whatever is happening externally will be met with peace internally. It doesn't matter if the world around us is in chaos or falling apart, we have a choice to make in how we respond to it. When we face it with calm and resolve, our perspective completely changes.
Instead of getting wrapped up in the outer world with our breath tightening and rapid, it flows in easily and slowly. We let go of what is out of our control. We make the choice to control what we can and that is our thoughts, words, and actions. We get to decide whether we are going to go into reactive mode or proactive mode. Reactive responds to the situation in an unhealthy and sometimes regrettable way. Proactive gets ahead of the situation and changes direction in a healthy and positive way.
When we exhale joy, we're saying to the universe and ourselves our desire for a beautiful feeling. We're sharing a positive vibe with all who come into contact with us, not only through our thoughts and words but also our actions.
There are some people we come into contact with who naturally have that "feel good" vibe. Everyone around them is happier just through their presence, their willingness to help, and their seamless ability to do so without effort. It's just how they are. It's how they go about their daily lives. In fact, I believe that those who exude joy just by being themselves have no idea of the number of people they have positively impacted. They are humble and unassuming.
When we exhale, think about what we are putting out there for the world to see. What if a mirror was placed in front of us with each exhale? Would we like what we see in terms of our attitude? How would we feel if we were on the receiving end of our words and actions?
Realizing the impact we have on others, either directly or indirectly, can also have an impact on us. It's time to take a step back and focus once again on the breath: breathe in peace, breathe out joy.
I'm a lover of life, an eternal optimist, and I have an intense desire to add value through simple living and positive vibes.
