I write a lot about minimalism and enjoying your space.
Whether it be your work space or home, it's important to have it the way you want it.
And if you don't?
You have the choice to make the change. So, how do you get started?
Know the purpose.
Why do you want this space in the first place? Don't simply have a space just because you want it. It's kind of like buying a piece of fitness equipment, like a treadmill, and then the only use it gets is hanging clothes on it. If you want it, know why and how you're going to use it.
For me, it was important to have a space at home where I could write, pay bills, and do some reading. I tried sitting at the bar in our kitchen, but that was the hub for a lot of activity. It was time to think of an alternative area for me.
Compromise is key.
Think about what you can control. Depending upon your living and/or work situation, there might be parts of the environment where you need to have some give and take.
When my husband and I made the decision to downsize to a one-bedroom department, it was important for each of us to have a space of our own. We have a study off our kitchen, and that became his new office area. Our bedroom was big enough for me to have a corner for a desk area without it being cluttered, so that become mine. His compromise was moving to a much smaller living arrangement, and mine was conceding the study area. Although he would have shared it with me, it was important for us to still have some autonomy with so much shared space.
Make it yours.
Clear out the space so you feel comfortable moving around in it. Your mood greatly improves when there is less clutter. Take before and after pictures and make sure you take time each week to tidy up. It's crazy how quickly clutter can accumulate.
It's important to have a little corner of the world where you control the chaos, a quiet corner of sorts, your own little oasis.
I hope you find yours.
